Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic treatment promotes the optimal function of muscles, joints, and nerves of the body. Treatment can help restore the normal function of the body, decrease inflammation, reduce scar tissue, promote flexibility and improve nervous system function. Dr. Mandin uses a variety of manual techniques including joint manipulation (or adjustments) and soft tissue therapy, as well as therapeutic modalities (laser, ultrasound, interferential current and muscle stimulation). Chiropractors are known as drugless practitioners, aiming to help the body heal without medication, however, we recognize the value of pharmaceutical drugs and supplements. As such, we work with other health care providers, as needed, to help you achieve the best outcome. We offer a variety of approaches to care and customize our approach to your specific needs and concerns.

Chiropractors diagnose conditions falling within their scope of practice and are trained to identify conditions that may require a referral to another health care professional. Chiropractors are most known for joint manipulation (or adjustments) of the spine but can treat other areas of the body including jaw, hands, wrists, elbows, ankles, knees, and hips.

Dr. Mandin has taken advanced training in foot mechanics and gait analysis and assesses the impact of foot dysfunction on the entire body. Foot problems can lead to altered function, causing problems not only in the feet but higher up in knees, hips or low back. Foot problems can present in many ways, such as: foot pain, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, pain or grinding of the knees, snapping or sore hips, and low back pain.
At our office, Dr. Mandin uses his background in both Western and Eastern medicine to take a holistic approach with his patients, looking for underlying causes and aggravating factors whenever possible. This approach guides our treatment and empowers patients with strategies (including stretches and strengthening exercises), they can implement at home to improve their health and well-being. We look forward to becoming part of your health care team.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used for over 2000 years and helps stimulate the body’s natural healing, enhance immune function, reduce inflammation, and support physical and emotional well-being. Whether you are looking to recover from an injury, or improve your health through better sleep and relaxation, we have options to help you meet your goals. We offer a range of acupuncture techniques including fine-needle acupuncture, acupressure, laser acupuncture, and Gua Sha (a manual therapy using a smooth tool on skin, as described in the section below ‘Care by a Registered Acupuncturist’). We use single-use sterile acupuncture needles and follow strict infection control measures. Our comfortable and quiet environment is designed to ensure your experience is private, pleasant, and relaxing.

We offer acupuncture under the care of either a Chiropractor or a Registered Acupuncturist. As a Chiropractor, Dr. Mandin offers treatment for primarily musculoskeletal concerns, and as a Registered Acupuncturist, Colin Mandin may treat a broader scope of conditions such as: gastrointestinal disorders, Bell’s palsy, metabolic concerns, stress, and insomnia. Colin Mandin has studied at the Academy of Traditional Acupuncture in Toronto and participates in continuing education on an ongoing basis. His approach to care combines traditional theories of acupuncture with modern scientific evidence. How can we help you discover the benefits of acupuncture?

Chiropractic Acupuncture
As a chiropractor with additional training in acupuncture, Dr. Mandin uses acupuncture to complement manual therapy and help restore the function of the muscles, joints, and nerves. Injury to these tissues and resulting inflammation often creates a cycle of tightness, spasm, and pain. This cycle can cause problems with our ability to walk, be active, work, sleep, or concentrate. Acupuncture is used to reduce pain and muscle spasm, relax tight muscles, and lower inflammation in an injured area. This style of acupuncture focuses more on the local area of injury and the specific tissues involved.  Some common conditions treated with chiropractic acupuncture include:
  • sprains and strains,
  • low back pain
  • headaches and migraines
  • nerve irritation
  • tendonitis or bursitis, and
  • arthritis
Many personal health insurance plans offer some coverage for acupuncture performed by a chiropractor, as part of chiropractic coverage. For more information, see our FAQ page »
Care by a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac)
Registered Acupuncturists (R.Ac.’s) are regulated health professionals in Ontario and are trained to assess and treat imbalances in the proper energy (Qi) communication and transportation systems (channels) throughout the body. Acupuncture has been studied and refined for more than 2000 years. Over this time, different styles and techniques have been developed which allow us offer a variety of treatment options to suit our patients needs and concerns.  In addition to fine-needle acupuncture, we offer *Gua Sha treatment where a smooth tool is used on the skin to stimulate the nervous system, increase blood and lymphatic flow, decrease inflammation, boost immune function, and remove abnormal qi and blood stagnation. A R.Ac. can treat a broad range of conditions and seeks to identify underlying imbalances contributing to the condition(s).  Imbalances can present as local or isolated problems (like back pain or tennis elbow), but often imbalances can persist and grow to impact larger systems in the body and manifest in conditions such as: irritable bowel, night sweats, acid reflux, abnormal stress response, anxiety, fibromyalgia, or insomnia. Correcting these imbalances through treatment and lifestyle modifications can often help with many chronic conditions which are so prevalent in society today.   Common conditions we treat as a Registered Acupuncturist are:
  • all the acute conditions a chiropractor would see, plus…
    • low energy
    • fibromyalgia
    • irritable bowel related disorders
    • insomnia
    • stress, anxiety, low mood
    • weight concerns
    • menopause
    • arthritis
    • side effects of cancer treatment
    • diabetes and metabolic concerns
    • Bell’s palsy

Biomechanical Gait Analysis & Custom Orthotics

Dr. Mandin has a special interest in foot biomechanics as it relates to the entire kinetic chain, from the feet up to the knees, hips, back and neck. Many conditions seen in clinic can be aggravated by faulty foot mechanics, and often once the problem is identified and corrected, treatment is more effective and better outcomes are achieved. Dr. Mandin does both biomechanical and orthopedic exams, as well as a computerized gait scan to screen for conditions.

Many biomechanical problems can be caused or aggravated by altered foot mechanics. Where faulty foot mechanics are identified and are causing dysfunction or discomfort, we provide treatment recommendations for the presenting condition, suggestions for home care, and guidance on shoe fit and selection. To correct foot mechanical problems, custom orthotics may be recommended.

Custom orthotics are devices inserted into shoes and are designed to reproduce our normal foot mechanics. These devices, (sometimes referred to as custom arch supports) provide support, absorb shock and stabilize excessive movement. Our orthotics are custom made to meet your specific needs. When foot mechanics are compromised, there may be abnormal pressure on areas of the foot (a concern for diabetics or those with neuropathy), and increased strain of the joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons of the feet, legs, and back. A bio-mechanical assessment and gait analysis is good to consider any time such conditions appear without trauma or are persistent or recurrent in nature.

We offer a range of orthotic designs suited to patient needs and preferences (e.g. shoes worn, activity level, amount of cushion needed, and the condition the patient is being treated for). When the orthotics are given, we guide people through how to best adapt to them, and how to get the most benefit from their use.

Custom orthotics are commonly used to help conditions such as:

  • plantar fasciitis
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • tendonitis
  • persistent knee pain
  • arthritis
  • diabetes
  • hip or back pain
  • shin splints

Many personal health insurance health plans offer some coverage for custom orthotics dispensed by a chiropractor.

Therapeutic Modalities

We offer a range of therapeutic options to complement your care when indicated and these include:

  • Laser therapy: Therapeutic (cold, or low level) lasers use infra-red light energy to stimulate blood flow and cellular regeneration to decrease pain, inflammation, and to promote healing. This safe, painless procedure helps many conditions including sprains and strains, arthritis, gout, fibromyalgia, nerve pain (neuralgia) and whiplash.
  • Ultrasound: This therapy uses high frequency sound vibrations to penetrate tissues—stimulating healing and breaking down unhealthy scar tissue.
  • Electrotherapy: This treatment sends tiny electrical impulses into tissues to stimulate blood flow, reduce swelling, and promote the secretion of endorphins and other natural pain killers. Electrotherapy helps relieve pain and muscle spasm and can be helpful with sprains, strains and in reducing muscle atrophy or weakness following an injury.
  • Fascial manipulation therapy: Manual therapy which works on the myofascial connective tissue and muscles in the body to help restore movement to tissues, increase blood flow, decrease pain, stiffness and inflammation, and allows the body to heal itself. This technique works well for recurrent or chronic conditions, such as tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and shin splints.
